Had a great meal at Prime Meats in Brooklyn. We'd heard a lot of good things, so expectations were high, and it came through on all levels. There was something wrong with the air conditioning in the dining room, so we sat happily in a corner of the dark wood bar, enjoying the olde-timey atmo of the tin ceiling and the waitstaff's suspenders. Between three of us, we shared shrimp cocktail, a green salad with bacon on its bacon, a side of spaetzle with herbs and cheese, the cote de boeuf for 2 and the pork schnitzel. The shrimp was high quality and perfectly done, with a traditional cocktail sauce. The salad was absolutely delicious - what isn't, covered in bacon dressing? The beef was fantastic. A real contender in the New York steak battle. A fine piece of meat (presented to us for approval at the table, prior to cooking), expertly done to medium rare and full of flavor, served with a bright, vinegary salad of watercress and radishes. The spaetzle was a great side for the beef, savory and comforting. The schnitzel was also outstanding, with the rich flavor of a kurobuta tonkatsu, not too thick or thin, served simply with lemon wedges, and propped up on a pillow of German potato salad. More of that bacon... We also had a bottle of excellent rioja riserva, plus one glass of reisling just for the schnitzel. Dessert was an apple tart and a glass of Old Portrero whiskey. The tart was fantastic and the whiskey complimented it perfectly. All together an outstanding meal and we can't wait to go back. This was a celebratory meal for us, so we went all out, but I'm imagining a simple and happy dinner next weekend, of just schnitzel and a beer.
