Four days in Jupiter, Florida, followed by five days at Disney World. What a great mid-February break! Of course, we experienced record-breaking low temperatures in Orlando (28 degrees!), but we did also miss the biggest blizzard of the season in New York, so I suppose it is ok. We had a great time.
Jupiter: The Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum was a real highlight. We also enjoyed our first attempt at golfing, shopping in Palm Beach, eating out at Carmine's, making lasagna for everyone, watching the sun set over the 18th hole, seeing egrets in the parking lot of the grocery store, drinking crazy small-batch gin, champagne in the hot tub, fixing Uncle Len's technology...
Disney World: What fun! There was something amazing every day. We did have one morning halfway through when we were sure we were insane to have booked a whole five days at an amusement park - the crowds, the people - it all seemed a bit oppressive. But we got over it. Everything there is conspiring to make sure you have fun. If you can't have fun, there is probably something wrong with you.
A few of my favorite things:
- The Haunted Mansion - a classic. hokey and beautiful at the same time.
- Pirates of the Carribbean - another classic. who doesn't love pirates?
- Expedition Everest - a brand new ride in the Animal Kingdom. A truly fantastic rollercoaster!
- Tower of Terror - so beautifully set-up and a really fun ride
- Epcot Segway Tour - a perfect morning, cool and sunny. We got to enter the park before it opened. They give you segway training, and then lead you on a tour of the world showcase. This was one of the best things ever - a totally unique experience.
- Mission: Space - a flight simulator ride that takes you on a journey to Mars. You actually pull g's!
- Our hotel - The Animal Kingdom Lodge. Relaxing and beautiful, with an African theme. Pay the extra $ to get a savannah view room. It was so great to get up every morning and have coffee on our private balcony while watching the amazing animals roam around beneath us. The restaurant Boma was very good.
- Behind The Seeds Tour - we really enjoyed the Living With the Land ride (surprise! an agriculture-themed ride was fun!), so we decided to take the in-depth tour of Disney's experimental greenhouses, aquaculture tanks and biotechnology labs. We were the only people on the tour and it was fascinating.
- Flights of Wonder - an educational live bird show in the AK. Really well done with very cool birds and lots of audience interaction.
- Fantasmic - the name says it all. The nighttime show at MGM. Truly unique and spectacular. Really worthwhile! Don't miss it!!
- Dinner at Le Cellier - this is a steakhouse in "Canada" in Epcot's world showcase. It was great! A proper steakhouse.
- Shopping at Mitsukoshi - this is an offshoot of a real Japanese department store. It is huge and has all kinds of great Japanese stuff. I went crazy over the tabi socks!
- Club Cool - a Coca-Cola outpost in the middle of Epcot. They have fountains dispensing several different Coca-Cola products from around the world. All free! Why pay for a soda in Epcot? Just visit Club Cool. My favorite was the watermelon soda from China.
I know there was more... But pictures are worth a thousand words.
